INVENTING NEW MEDIA

STEREOSCOPIC HEADSET – NOT BUILT FROM SCRATCH

So pieces are arriving in the post – got a GO PRO HD HERO 2 & the OKM II K CLASSIC STUDIO BINAURAL STEREO HEADSET – and as toys go they are extremely fun to test.

As what I am making is essentially different bits of kit all stuck to a helmet it is hard to feel like I am actually inventing something – but hey! it’s the 1st build as prototype – and as I learnt last week while doing RED4K courses – the film industry pioneered through the use of taking existing technology from the dentures and sewing industry (dentures for the manufacture of film material and sewing because of the rapid pull down and stop mechanism for the frame rate!)
This video from TED also reminds me that actually it’s fundamental to technology to  “stand on the shoulders of giants” as one man inspired by a quote from Douglas Adam’s final novel in ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ Mostly Harmless, where Arthur Dent finds himself stranded on a less evolved planet and after hoping to impress the locals with his technical knowledge he comes to this conclusion

“Left to his own devices he couldn’t build a toaster. He could just about make a sandwich and that’s it.”
